Do’s and Don’ts Of Decorating A Living Room

Your living room is the most important room in the house, when you’re thinking of decorating your home. After all, this is the space where you do all your entertaining and spend a lot of time together as a family.

Let’s have a look at a few do’s and don’ts to keep in mind, when you set out to decorate this room.

Choose the colors for your living room wisely, making sure that the different colors used in the room are coordinated into a unifying theme, right from the carpets and rugs all the way to the throw pillows and the curtains. However, don’t go overboard on matching shades perfectly, lest you end up with the space looking too sterile and uncomfortable.

Don’t make the mistake of choosing the color of the paint first. In fact, it should be one of your last considerations. Paints are available in hundreds of colors and can be changed easily, unlike the other items in your living room that you’ll have to live with for way longer.

Plan on having a focal point in the living room, that will function as the center of your room, with the other items arranged around it. Usually the focal point is the TV. The focal point can even be your most expensive or favorite item. Having chosen one, map out a plan to decorate around it.

Never commit the cardinal sin of getting a rug that’s too small for your furniture pieces to fit into. It’s good to ensure that all four legs of your major furniture pieces are on the rug. If that’s not entirely possible, at least make sure the front legs are on the rug.

Don’t make the mistake of buying a low-quality sofa. A sofa is a big investment and you will have to live with it for many years. Do not try to save money on this one investment.

Throughout the house, make sure that all artwork is hung at eye level and not closer to the ceiling, which happens to be a common decorating mistake.

Use a mix of lighting in your living room with overhead lights, ambient lighting and task lighting all used as appropriate. It’s also a good idea to invest in dimmer switches.

Use good quality throw pillows as decorative accents to add pops of color or to introduce patterns in your otherwise mostly neutral living room. But don’t use too many, as it will be inconvenient to move them all off every time someone wants to sit on the sofa.

Make sure that the furniture and other things in the living room don’t make the space feel overwhelming and keep the knick-knacks and collectibles to a minimum, despite your desire to have them all out on display. And don’t forget to give the room a personal touch by adding personal memorabilia and photographs
