The first step in going clutter-free is believing that you can do it. Your home may seem like a cluttered mess at the moment, but that doesn’t mean it has to stay that way. Take baby steps, and let the first one of them be just the belief and the willingness to not let clutter control your life, but for you to be able to turn things around.

Begin with smaller, easier projects. Start there. And keep building up on your smaller victories. This will keep you motivated to tackle the bigger messes. Just split them up into smaller chunks. Remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day!

Keep the size of your home in mind whenever you decide to buy anything. If your closets and cupboards are brimming with clothes to the point of being ready to burst, don’t think of getting a new cupboard, change your buying habits.

At least once every three or four months, discard the things you don’t need and don’t use often. There’s a famous saying, ‘a place for everything and everything in its place’. Make it your decluttering mantra. Make sure everything in your home has a designated space for it. Also, it’s a good idea to invest in a filing cabinet and a chest of drawers, if you don’t already have them. Never underestimate the power of a junk drawer. It’s a drawer designated for just that. Junk!

Discard all the bits of paper that keeps getting accumulated in your home, at least once every few months. It will seem like a mammoth task if you don’t do it often enough.

It may be time for some soul-searching. Think about it. Are you a shopaholic? Do you fall for every Buy1 Get1 offer that comes your way? It may be time for you to realize and remember that life isn’t about things as much as it is about experiences. Skip the supermarket sale, and take that trip you’ve been dreaming of for months. Remember, experiences don’t need storage space, things do!

Keep in mind that even after you’ve undertaken decluttering projects and finished them successfully, there will be days weeks or months when your house will seem to have accumulated clutter again. Cut yourself some slack and don’t be swayed by the pictures of beautifully uncluttered homes that you see in magazines. Do not let panic set in and have the courage to start over!
